Bear hedge fund sank as Merrill protected clients (Reuters)

A late June move by Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. to protect its clients from a struggling hedge fund run by Bear Stearns Cos. Inc. helped hasten the fund’s ultimate collapse, court papers show.
